17 Year Old Conducts Northern Sinfonia

In spring 2009 Channel 4 aired a hugely successful three-part series entitled ‘The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies’.  The show presented composer and conductor Alexander Prior [then age 16] with the ultimate task – to uncover the world’s top musical talent. Having scoured the globe in his search, the series concluded with a one-off performance of Alexander’s specially written concerto at The Sage Gateshead.

Now, seven months on, Alexander Prior is set to return to the venue once more for an evening of spectacular music alongside special guest, cellist Danjulo Ishizaka

Alexander will conduct a repertoire consisting of some of the world’s best-loved classical pieces, including Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Grieg’s Holberg Suite. He will also pay homage to one of his biggest inspirations, Sibelius, through performances of Valse Triste and Scenes With Cranes, before being joined by cellist Danjulo Ishizaka for a rousing rendition of Elgar’s beautiful ‘Cello concerto in E minor’.

Danjulo Ishizaka is an international classical star in his own right. Awarded the prestigious ‘ECHO Klassik’ in 2006 for his debut album, ‘Sonatas for Cello and Piano’, the accolades continue to accumulate. The combining of these two incredible talents on the same stage promises to make for an unmissable evening.

The concert will continue Alexander Prior’s prominent rise to stardom. Still only 17 years old, he receives numerous commissions from ballet to film and symphonic music.  His works have been performed by orchestras including the City of London Sinfonia, the National Symphony Orchestra and, the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra. In February 2008, Alexander’s ballet Mowgli (based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book) premiered at the Kremlin Theatre, Moscow, with the New Opera Orchestra.

Alexander Prior conducts the Northern Sinfonia on Wednesday 20th January at the Sage Gateshead. Call 0191 443 4661 for tickets.
